#BDS: Israeli to build housing for Turkey's middle class

While Turkey drafts bill that will prevent Israelis from buying land there, mega-developer Yossi Avrahami builds major housing project in Izmir

Real estate mogul Yossi Avrahami is set to be the first Israeli to market housing to the Turkish middle class – bypassing the irksome attitude Turkey has recently expressed towards Israeli developers.

In November, the Turkish media reported that the government is drafting legislation that will prohibit Israelis from buying land in the Muslim nation. Instead, it will promote selling land to citizens of Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.

#BDS: 8 countries absent from OECD tourism conference

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) Norway, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Sweden, Iceland, Turkey and South Africa will not be present at the OECD tourism conference to be held in Jerusalem this month despite objections from the Palestinian Authority, Palestinian civil society groups said Thursday.

The controversy comes amid attempts by Israel to use the conference to further its territorial claims on Jerusalem and in response to concerns raised by Palestinian and international civil society, as well as Palestinian officials, that the conference would serve to whitewash Israel's violations of international law.

Some of the eight countries have explained their withdrawals were political in nature.

Norway and Turkey condemned comments made by Israeli politicians in the run-up to the conference. The Swedish delegation to the OECD referred campaigners to EU policy on the status of Jerusalem and hinted their stance was an attempt to assert the policy.

In a blow to the credibility of the conference at which officials were to discuss tourism policy, a majority of invited countries did not send tourism ministers but sent low-ranking officials instead.

The Greek delegation to the OECD told campaigners during telephone calls that no officials from Athens would make the trip and that Greece would merely be represented by a staff member from the Greek tourist information center in Tel Aviv. The Czech Republic is the only EU country to send political representation.

#BDS: Erdogan to boycott Mediterranean conference if Netanyahu shows

Turkish PM slams Israel over IDF raid on a Gaza-bound ship in which nine Turkish activists were killed, says he doesn't want to talk to a PM who supports such actions.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not want to talk with his Israeli counterpart and will not attend a climate change conference in Athens on Friday if Benjamin Netanyahu is there, he told Greece's Skai TV on Monday.
Turkey, once a close ally of Israel, has become a sharp critic since nine pro-Palestinian Turkish activists were killed in an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound ship in May.

#BDS: Pro-Palestine initiative urges directors to return Israeli prizes

The Initiative of Boycott against Israel for Palestine, a Turkish civil society organization that aims to raise international awareness of a long-running blockade on Gaza and the plight of Palestinian refugees, has called on Turkish filmmakers Semih Kaplanoğlu and Reha Erdem to return the awards they won at this year’s Haifa International Film Festival.

The group, in an open letter sent to media outlets on Wednesday, called on Kaplanoğlu, the director of the Golden Bear award-winning drama “Bal” (Honey), to return the distribution prize his film won in the 26th Haifa film festival in September. In another open letter posted on its website, www.boykotisrail.org, the group called on Erdem to return the best film prize his film “Kosmos” won at the festival’s Golden Anchor Competition for Mediterranean Cinema, which ran from Sept. 23-30 in Israel.

Kaplanoğlu’s “Bal,” billed by the Haifa festival’s judges as a “rare cinematic poem,” had won a distribution grant in the sum of 3,000 euros, funded by France’s TV5, which was awarded to the Israeli distributor of Kaplanoğlu’s film. The judges of the competition had also praised Erdem for “creating a unique cinematic world of ideas and emotions while using a brave and idiosyncratic cinematic language” in “Kosmos.”

#BDS: Turkey will not attend OECD conference, minister says

Turkey will not send any delegation to a biannual tourism conference in Israel later this month, the country’s culture minister said Tuesday, marking the first boycott of Israel on a multilateral level since a deadly raid on a Turkish aid ship in May.
Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay told a group of reporters Tuesday that Turkey would not send any representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD, conference on Oct. 20-22 in Jerusalem. “Regrettable statements have been made. We want tourism to take place, not politics,” he said.
Diplomatic sources told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review that the Turkish decision would mark the first boycott of Israel on a multilateral platform. Despite the May 31 flotilla incident, an Israeli Foreign Ministry diplomat attended a meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, or CICA, last week in Ankara.
Initially, Turkey intended to send the ministry’s deputy undersecretary, Özgür Özaslan, to the tourism conference, but Ankara changed its decision after evaluating the situation.
Spain and Britain will also not attend the OECD conference.
