"Since the great majority of Palestinian civil society issued its call for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against Israel in July 2005 to compel it to fulfil its obligations under international law, there has never been a period with as many BDS achievements as that following the Israeli massacre in Gaza in the winter of 2008-2009 and the bloodbath on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla in May 2010. People of conscience around the world seem to have crossed a threshold in challenging Israel’s impunity through effective pressure, not appeasement or “constructive engagement.” This has been most pronounced in the cultural field, where support for the 2004 call by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI)2 has witnessed spectacular growth."

Among the books we read, some go farther than others toward informing our thinking, opinions and actions in the world. These invariably become the books we read and refer to over and over again, the pages dog-eared, passages underlined, margins filled with notes.
BDS: Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights by Omar Barghouti, for me, is this kind of book. I purchased it already knowing that I would, in short order, mess it up; cracking the spine, marking passages and filling it with scribbled comments. It exceeded my expectations, proving to be a generously dense and invaluable source of information and inspiration about the call for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel."

#BDS: Dropping the last mask of democracy
""You should definitely postpone your book launch in Jerusalem," warned a close friend who felt that the planned event for launching my recently published book on the Palestinian-led movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against Israel might be too risky in light of the recently passed Israeli law that effectively bans support for the thriving boycott movement. At the packed bookshop-cafe in occupied East Jerusalem last Thursday, however, the engaged and Italian-coffee scented atmosphere was almost jubilant, as if declaring a collective defiance of Israel's latest draconian measure.
Much controversy has arisen since the Israeli parliament passed legislation that would effectively criminalise support for any boycott against Israel or its institutions, under threat of heavy penalties and worse, without the need to prove "guilt". Dozens of Israeli civil society organisations and leading legal scholars, including many opposing the boycott, have resolutely opposed this exceptionally authoritarian law on diverse grounds, ranging from the most principled to the downright pragmatic."

#BDS: عمر البرغوثي: قانون المقاطعة هو أفضل شهادة على نجاح حملة المقاطعة
يحمل إقرار الكنيست الإسرائيلي لاقتراح قانون "المقاطعة"، الذي بادر إليه رئيس الائتلاف الحكومي من حزب "الليكود" زئيف إلكين، دلائل سياسية لنجاح وتأثير حملات المقاطعة الاقتصادية والثقافية لإسرائيل فلسطينيًا وعالميًا كأحد أهمّ طرق النضال السلمي ضد الاحتلال والأبرتهايد الإسرائيلي، غير أنه في الوقت ذاته يفضح الوجه الحقيقي للفاشية الإسرائيلية المتصاعدة التي تمارس بأدوات "ديمقراطية" وازدياد سطوة اليمين المتطرف، إلى جانب كونه حلقة في سلسلة القوانين العنصرية التي تهدف إلى تجريم العمل السياسي الخارج عن الإجماع الصهيوني والمسّ بالحريات الديمقراطية الأساسية، واستمرار لسياسات تكريس وشرعنة الاستيطان الإسرائيلي الكولنيالي في الضفة الغربية وضمّ أراضيها، والتي تهدف بالأساس إلى تقويض أية فرصة لتسوية مستقبلية.
بعد إقرار القانون التقت صحيفة "فصل المقال" مع عمر البرغوثي أحد قادة الحملة الفلسطينية للمقاطعة الأكاديمية والثقافية لإسرائيل، وهو أسير سابق ومناضل فلسطيني معروف، عضو مؤسس في حملة المجتمع المدني الفلسطيني لمقاطعة إسرائيل وسحب الاستثمارات منها وفرض العقوبات عليها وفي الحملة الفلسطينية للمقاطعة الأكاديمية والثقافية لإسرائيل. وهو مؤلف لكتاب صدر بالإنجليزية (2011) وبالفرنسية (2010) بعنوان، مقاطعة، سحب استثمارات، عقوبات: النضال الكوني من أجل الحقوق الفلسطينية.

"Daniel Meyerowitz-Katz’s ill-informed and manifestly misleading attack on the Palestinian-led, global movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel contained several misrepresentations and some outright fabrications. The historical account given by Meyerowitz-Katz is not only skewed; it is a typical attempt to obscure or omit altogether the basic facts about BDS.
An overwhelming majority of Palestinian civil society issued the BDS Call on July 9, 2005 as an effective, non-violent strategy to end Israel’s violations of international law and Palestinian rights. This civil, peaceful and inclusive struggle, largely inspired by the successful South African anti-apartheid movement, is based on international law and universal principles of human rights."
