#BDS: Boycott Israeli goods campaign receives momentum from abroad

"The Palestinian campaign to boycott the Israeli goods made in the illegal settlements of the occupied territories in the West Bank has received a boost from abroad with South Africans and more European states joining the movement.

The “Made in Israel” label has already become a big problem for Israel’s international trade.

The Palestinians have long called for a boycott of goods made in the illegal Israeli settlements and have even lit bonfires to destroy them."

#BDS Victory: #EU Boycotts #UK Company for Dealing with #Israel

"The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement praised the EU on Wednesday for deciding not to renew a contract with the world’s largest security solutions company, because it also does business with Israel.

Group 4 Securicor (G4S), a UK-based company, has provided security services to the buildings of the European Parliament since 2008 – but lost the tender as of April 13, because it also provides security services to Jewish communities, security checkpoints and Israeli prisons at which Arab convicts from Judea and Samaria are held, according to BDS."

#BDS Victory: #G4S loses its contract with the European Parliament

"The European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine (ECCP) is pleased to be able to mark Palestinian Prisoners Day by announcing that the European Union has declined to renew a contract with private security company G4S amidst concerns raised by MEPs and campaign groups about the role the company plays in equipping Israeli prisons in which Palestinian political prisoners are held in violation of international law.
G4S has provided security services to the buildings of the European Parliament since 2008 but the contract award notice (service contract 118611-2012) published on the EU official tenders’ website on April 13th shows that G4S hast lost its contract with the European Parliament.
In March 2011, a group of 28 Members of the European Parliament, including 8 MEPs from Denmark and 6 from the UK wrote a letter to former EU Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, demanding that the Parliament dropped G4S as the principal security contractor if G4S continued to provide security services to illegal Israeli settlements, checkpoints and Israeli prisons at which Palestinians are detained."

#BDS Report: #EU Trade with Israeli Settlements

"1. Background information on Israeli settlements in the OPT
Israeli settlements are areas in which Israeli and Jewish civilians have
established homes, communities and new towns on occupied Palestinian land.
There are over 200 Israeli settlements and settlement outposts in the West
Bank and East Jerusalem with a combined population of half a million people.
1
200,000 of these settlers are living in East Jerusalem.
2
The total area
controlled by settlements is around 43 per cent of the West Bank (See Appendix
B).
3
Settlement construction first began in 1967 and, despite their illegality and
international condemnation, settlements have grown and prospered over the
past 50 years, significantly changing the facts on the ground. The annual
growth rate of the settler population in the West Bank is significantly higher
than population growth inside Israel at 3.7 per cent
4
and as these new towns
grow, more of the land falls under Israeli control. There are different
motivations for Israelis to move to the occupied territories. Some move for
economic reasons while others are ideological settlers, who make up the
majority of settlement outposts. "

"The European Commission should stop funding a research project coordinated by the United Kingdom’s Natural History Museum (NHM) because of the involvement of an Israeli laboratory that operates in the occupied Palestinian West Bank, according to a letter written by more than 20 British scientists and other public figures. The 5-year, €5.19 million project, called NanoReTox, began in 2008 and is seeking to elucidate the environmental and health impacts of nanoparticles used in cosmetic products."

#BDS: Occupation profiteer #Ahava soaks up #EU science grants

"Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the EU’s commissioner for scientific research, recently acknowledged that the cosmetics-maker Ahava was allocated more than €1 million worth of innovation grants from the Union over a period stretching from 1998 to 2013. Giving even one cent to Ahava involves facilitating breaches of international law because of the firm’s unlawful activities in the West Bank.

As Geoghegan-Quinn doesn’t appear to recognize this problem, she would be well-advised to read a report, issued in May, by the human rights organization B’Tselem. It highlights how Ahava is partly owned by two Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land: Mitzpe Shalem and Qalya. Both of those settlements are illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which forbids an occupying power from transferring its civilian population to the territory it occupies."

#BDS: Boycotters ramp it up: “put an end to #Agrexco’s presence in Europe”

"The BDS movement in Europe appears to be going for a knockout.  A coalition of 23 organizations from across Europe issued a "Political declaration after the Forum against Agrexco" outlining their campaign against the Israeli agricultural giant which is half owned by the Israeli Government and responsible for 60-70% of the agricultural produce grown in Israel’s illegal settlements. Here is a press release:

Facing a bankruptcy hearing in a Tel Aviv court Tuesday, Israeli export company Agrexco has been beset by bad headlines in recent months. Now its problems look set to worsen, after Palestinian solidarity groups from across Europe joined forces to escalate a boycott campaign."

"The European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine joins the European Network Against Arms Trade, in its support to the appeal of the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) for an international military embargo of Israel.

This appeal, already endorsed by Nobel Peace Prize winners Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire, Rigoberta Menchú and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, was released by the BNC, a coalition encompassing all Palestinian political parties, trade unions, NGOs and mass organisations to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the International Court of Justice ruling confirming the illegality of Israel’s West Bank apartheid Wall."

#BDS: European anti-arms trade network endorses international call for #Israel arms embargo

"Seven years after the ruling by the International Court of Justice that the wall (the so-called “separation barrier “) between Israel and the Palestinian Territories was an illegal construction, European anti-arms trade groups have endorsed international calls for an arms embargo on Israel.

#BDS: Who is arming #Israel?

The website gives information about the nature and extent of these relations and about relevant arms trade regulations.

As an important economic partner of Israel, Europe could use its position to promote a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There is no military solution to this conflict."

#BDS: A concerted effort from Europe against Israeli produce exporter Agrexco

"This past weekend in the Montpellier, France, over 100 activists from 9 countries gathered for the first ever European Forum Against Agrexco. Delegates from Italy, UK, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Palestine joined the French organizers for two full days of workshops aimed at strengthening the boycott campaign against the Israeli agricultural export giant.

Agrexco is Israel's largest fresh produce exporter and European markets account for the vast majority of their sales under the brand Carmel. The Israeli government's 50% stake in the company as well as their marketing of 60-70% of the fruit and vegetables grown in illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank have made Agrexco a prime strategic target for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign."

#BDS: European Forum against Agrexco/Carmel: BDS Europe, a Major Struggle

agrexco

"The Annual General Meeting of the Coalition against Agrexco has initiated this forum while Operation "Gaza Strawberries", conducted by Agrexco, the CRIF and the Israeli Embassy in France, is in full swing.

Operation "Gaza Strawberries" has two goals. First, to nullify the impact of the efforts made to launch the French Ship for Gaza ("Thanks to Agrexco, there is no more blockade, so there is no point in sending the ship."). They are wasting their time, there will be a French ship in the second flotilla! The second goal was to nullify the Boycott and the rejection of Agrexco ("Since Agrexco is rescuing the Palestinians by exporting their products, boycotting Agrexco is boycotting the Palestinians."). This sordid maneuvering had the advantage of revealing the enormous challenge posed to Israel by this struggle because of the symbolic importance of the Carmel Agrexco brand."

#BDS: Who benefits from EU-Israel academic cooperation?

"One of the most enjoyable things that has happened since I wrote a book on Israel's relations with Europe is that I have been asked to speak at various universities. So when an invitation appeared in my email inbox to visit King's College London (KCL), I immediately accepted. Big mistake.

The request came from the International Center for the Study of Radicalization (ICSR), a partnership between King's College and the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya, Israel. I only became aware of the partnership one day before I was scheduled to address an ICSR seminar in January. Following a hasty consultation with some friends in the Palestine solidarity movement, I withdrew from the event, informing the organizers that I fully supported the campaign to boycott Israeli goods and institutions."
