#BDS Victory:

#BDS: Dropping the last mask of democracy

""You should definitely postpone your book launch in Jerusalem," warned a close friend who felt that the planned event for launching my recently published book on the Palestinian-led movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against Israel might be too risky in light of the recently passed Israeli law that effectively bans support for the thriving boycott movement. At the packed bookshop-cafe in occupied East Jerusalem last Thursday, however, the engaged and Italian-coffee scented atmosphere was almost jubilant, as if declaring a collective defiance of Israel's latest draconian measure.

Much controversy has arisen since the Israeli parliament passed legislation that would effectively criminalise support for any boycott against Israel or its institutions, under threat of heavy penalties and worse, without the need to prove "guilt". Dozens of Israeli civil society organisations and leading legal scholars, including many opposing the boycott, have resolutely opposed this exceptionally authoritarian law on diverse grounds, ranging from the most principled to the downright pragmatic."

#Veolia

(...)

#BDS: #LUSH Under Attack for Supporting #Palestine

"It’s no surprise then that the plight of Palestinians concerns LUSH. In 2011, the company was one of the first to support the OneWorld hit single “Freedom for Palestine”. This song, written by Dave Randall from Faithless, who having visited the West Bank, realised that life for most Palestinians living under the illegal Israeli occupation is just as bad as that endured by black South Africans during Apartheid.
‘Freedom for Palestine,’ inspired by AKA’s classic track ‘Free Nelson Mandela,’ was made in collaboration with many artists, including Maxi Jazz (Faithless), LSK, the Durban Gospel Choir and is supported by Roger Waters, Massive Attack, Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu & many others.
However, due to LUSH’s support of ‘Freedom for Palestine’, LUSH is now the centre of a hate campaign by those who support the Apartheid Israeli State."

#BDS: Update your boycott lists: #Nivea puts #Israel back on the map

"An Israeli blogger was astonished to discover that Nivea skin product company does not list Israel among the countries that sell its products, while the Palestinian territories do appear on its website.

After raising the issue with the company, Beiersdorf – who owns the Nivea brand – promptly added Israel to the list, and linked it to an empty co.il site."

#BDS: 44 weeks of pro-Palestinian protest in Adelaide, #Australia

"Adelaide is the capital of South Australia. It’s a sprawling city; Adelaide’s metropolitan region is more than twice the size of Gaza but with a smaller population. Gaza has 1.7 million people compared with Adelaide’s 1.2 million. However there are much more significant differences. Here we move freely in and out of our city and country, trade with everyone, have ready access to water, food, medicines, hospitals, medical care and education. No-one has ever imprisoned our whole population and then bombed us. Yet in spite of our differences and the vast 13,000 km distance between our cities a growing number of people in Adelaide are developing a sense of solidarity with the people of Palestine.
As part of our contribution to the international BDS movement, over 10 months ago the Australian Friends of Palestine Association held the first Adelaide Seacret (Israeli cosmetic company) protest. Each week an ever increasing number of pro-Palestinian protesters have demonstrated in front of the Myer Centre shopping complex which hosts the Seacret kiosk. Our latest You Tube shows that despite strong opposition and varying intimidating tactics from Zionist sympathizers, we are determined to continue to educate the people of Adelaide about Palestine and encourage them to boycott Israeli products."

#BDS: Occupation profiteer #Ahava soaks up #EU science grants

"Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the EU’s commissioner for scientific research, recently acknowledged that the cosmetics-maker Ahava was allocated more than €1 million worth of innovation grants from the Union over a period stretching from 1998 to 2013. Giving even one cent to Ahava involves facilitating breaches of international law because of the firm’s unlawful activities in the West Bank.

As Geoghegan-Quinn doesn’t appear to recognize this problem, she would be well-advised to read a report, issued in May, by the human rights organization B’Tselem. It highlights how Ahava is partly owned by two Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land: Mitzpe Shalem and Qalya. Both of those settlements are illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which forbids an occupying power from transferring its civilian population to the territory it occupies."

#BDS: In support of Indian artists protesting against #Israel

"In the story “Indian artists to boycott major show in Israel” (published in The Hindu on August 3), my views have been presented in a way that completely belies my life-long career in art based on the conviction that art and politics (and most certainly culture and politics) are interlocked in complex ways. And that artists can make a significant contribution to ongoing history through protests, boycotts, refusals, and direct address within and beyond their art practice.

Some bare facts: I signed the Palestine Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel in 2010, which makes my stand against the state of Israel/in support of the Palestinian cause, self-evident. Added to that, I am not invited to show in the forthcoming exhibition of Indian art in Tel Aviv, so there cannot be even a remote reason for me to renege or prevaricate on the issue of a boycott."
