#BDS: Jordan bans products made in Israeli settlements and in return exempts 2500 Israeli products from taxes

#BDS: An Israeli journalist learns the hard way that Egyptians are against normalization with Israel

"The author is reminded that the Palestinians are under occupation when almost all Egyptians refuse to meet with her because she writes for an Israeli newspaper.

While In Cairo, I finally found out that Israel is an occupying state. This is thanks to all those people who refused to meet with an Israeli journalist. In this way, my three-week stay in revolutionary Cairo turned into an adventure of seek bypass routes, and not without a great deal of professional frustration.
Some refused to meet on principle; they can be divided into two categories. The first group is comprised of those who reject the very existence of the State of Israel and believe that meeting with an Israeli (Jewish ) citizen signifies some kind of acceptance of or consent to its existence. When Israel remains something abstract and does not consist of people who are real and diverse, it's easier to view it as a Crusader castle deserving of only one fate."

#BDS: Jordan bans products made in West Bank settlements

What about goods that are made in "Israel"?

"AMMAN, (PIC)-- Jordan has placed a ban on all goods produced in Israeli settlements established on the Palestinian territories, the Jordanian daily Al Arab Al Yawm reported on Tuesday.

The government has created a list of Israeli companies and factories that operate fully or partially in settlements inside Palestine and has dispatched those names to the Jordan customs department to ensure that their products are not imported, informed sources told the newspaper.

Similarly, Jordanian minister of industry and trade Hani Mulki has requested that customs take necessary measures to ensure that the products of more than 220 settlement companies are banned."

#BDS: US group fights ban on Israel war crime bus ads

"LOS ANGELES (AFP) – A US lobby group is taking legal action to challenge a local authority's refusal to let it put posters on Seattle buses criticizing Israel's war crimes in Gaza.
The Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign (SMAC) vowed to pursue a lawsuit, despite a judge's refusal to force officials who run the bus system in Seattle and surrounding suburbs to allow the posters to be displayed.
In December, the group paid King County authorities nearly $1,800 to put ads on the sides of 12 Seattle-area metro buses reading: "Israeli War Crimes: Your Tax Dollars at Work," with a picture of a bombed out Gaza wall."

"NEW YORK – Israeli Apartheid Week, an effort by groups and activists supporting boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel to discredit it and label it an “apartheid state,” kicked off Monday in many cities and college campuses worldwide.

#BDS: Roger Waters: My journey to BDS

"In 1980, a song I wrote, "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2," was banned by the government of South Africa because it was being used by Black South African children to advocate their right to equal education. That apartheid government imposed a cultural blockade, so-to-speak, on certain songs, including mine.
Twenty-five years later, in 2005, Palestinian children participating in a West Bank festival used the song to protest Israel's apartheid wall. They sang "We don't need no occupation! We don't need no racist wall!" At the time, I hadn't seen first-hand what they were singing about.
A year later in 2006, I contracted to perform in Tel Aviv."

#BDS: World Social Forum puts Palestine solidarity into action

"Tens of thousands of activists gathered in Dakar, Senegal for the 2011 World Social Forum (WSF) in February. Activists from around the world held meetings, workshops and strategy sessions on the global BDS movement, working toward a global day of action on Palestinian Land Day, 30 March, and a global forum on Palestine to take place in the upcoming years within the WSF process.

Palestinian activist Ahmad Jaradat of the Alternative Information Center (www.alternativenews.org) has been involved in the WSF process over the past decade and sits on the international coordination committee of the global forum. The Electronic Intifada contributor Stefan Christoff spoke with Jaradat outside the Palestine people's assembly tent in Dakar on the 10th anniversary of the global anti-capitalist gathering."

#BDS: Is entertaining dictators worse than normalizing apartheid?

"As revolutions continue to sweep the Arab world, and the days of dictators seem numbered, we are learning a lot about the ties and alliances that have long characterized the west's dealing with tyrants around the globe. "Stability," apparently, requires us to make deals with the devil. And so we discover that the United States has long known about the human rights abuses of deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, deposed Tunisian president Zine el-Abedine Ben Ali, and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. But it was willing nonetheless not only to turn a blind eye to these, but even to enable and fund, directly or indirectly, oppressive regimes, for the sake of what exactly? Oil? Corporations? The so-called "peace process?" Iraqi "freedom?" Israel's security?

And as Arab tyrants are challenged, one by one, social media are abuzz with the embarrassing and numerous compliments and kind remarks that western heads of state, academics, pundits, and entertainers have given these deposed dictators. In a typical statement, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for example, said in 2009: "I really consider President and Mrs. Mubarak to be friends of my family." Apparently, the Clinton-Mubarak friendship goes back about 20 years. Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam, a close friend of Prince Andrew, Queen Elizabeth's second son and fourth in line to the British throne, has been a guest at Windsor Castle and Buckingham palace. The list is long."

#BDS: US students face jail time for disrupting Israeli official's speech

"Eleven University of California students face criminal charges and possible jail terms for protesting and disrupting a speech by an Israeli official as the Orange County district attorney's office engages in what one of the students' attorneys calls "selective and discriminatory prosecution"

In a University of California at Irvine auditorium on 8 February 2010, ten student activists nonviolently confronted Michael Oren, Israeli Ambassador to the United States, with prepared statements of protest. They stood up and challenged Oren's defense of Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip in winter 2008-09 -- during which more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed -- and the state's ongoing human rights violations.

"Propagating murder is not an expression of free speech," shouted one student before he was escorted out of the room. "You, sir, are an accomplice to genocide," another stood up and stated before he, too, was led away by police."

"South African artist William Kentridge has come to Israel for a retrospective of his work that opened at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem last Friday.

Though Kentridge, who is known for his vocal political opinions, had been pressured not to come by advocates of boycotting Israel, he decided instead to express his opposition to Israeli policy by attending the weekly demonstration in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. He also met with author David Grossman.
In addition, he used a press conference yesterday to condemn Israel's actions. However, he added, he does not believe cultural boycotts are the right solution."

#BDS: Mubarak's sons received millions of dollars for backing Israeli gas sales

"Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, the two sons of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, received hundreds of millions of dollars in "commissions" from the sale of Egyptian natural gas to Israel, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida reported yesterday.
Gamal initially demanded a 10% commission but eventually agreed to half of that, while his elder brother and businessman Hussein Salem settled for 2.5% each from the $2.5-billion deal signed in May 2005. Salem, considered to be very close to the Mubarak family, is the the largest shareholder in Eastern Mediterranean Gas, the Egyptian firm that supplied the gas to Israel. Mubarak's sons allegedly backed the controversial gas exports to Israel in return for the payments."

#BDS: Israel company recruiting Gadhafi mercenaries

"An Israeli company is recruiting mercenaries to support Moammar Gadhafi's efforts to suppress an uprising against his regime, an Israeli news site said Tuesday.

Citing Egyptian sources, the Hebrew-language news site Inyan Merkazi said the company was run by retired Israeli army commanders.

The report claims that many high-profile former Israeli officers have been illegally trading weapons in several African nations, and have faced interrogations over their activities in the past.

The news site said the head of the company recently met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Israeli intelligence chief Aviv Cokhavi. It added that the officials all approved the company's recruitment of mercenaries to help Gadhafi. "
