#BDS: Message to Vieux Farka Touré: Colonialism is colonialism, whether it happens in West Africa or Palestine

I was greatly disappointed to learn that Vieux Farka Touré performed last week at the Tel Aviv Opera House on November 26, 2010.  The son of the late, world-renowned Malian guitarist and singer Ali Farka Touré, Vieux Farka Touré has gained prominence in the international music world in recent years as one of Africa’s leading musicians.  His eponymous debut album was released in 2006, and he has since released three albums and performed at the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Vieux Farka Touré’s performing in Tel Aviv is a clear breach of the international movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israeli apartheid in Palestine—whose inception was in Occupied Palestine by Palestinian civil society. As an artist hailing from post-colonial Mali—a country well familiar with the ravages of colonialism and western imperialism—I had hoped and expected that Touré would have the moral courage to stand against participating in the normalization and legitimization of Israel’s colonization of Palestine.

#BDS: New South Wales Greens embrace BDS

At its State Delegates Council meeting held on the weekend in Sydney, the NSW Greens unanimously endorsed the following proposal:

That the Greens NSW call upon all Australians and the Australian government to boycott Israeli goods, trading and military arrangements, and sporting, cultural and academic events as a contribution to the struggle to end Israel’s occupation and colonisation of Palestinian territory, the siege of Gaza and imprisonment of 1.5 million people, and Israel’s institution of a system of apartheid, by endorsing the following actions:
1. condemning Israel’s apartheid and occupation policies;
2. censuring Israel’s violations of the human rights of Palestinians and its failure to abide by international law;
3. halting any military cooperation or trade with Israel;
4. refraining from participation in any form of sporting event, academic and cultural cooperation, collaboration or joint projects with Israeli institutions or teams except those that publicly oppose Israel’s apartheid and occupation policies;
5. advocating a comprehensive boycott of Israeli institutions at national and international levels, including suspension of all forms of funding and subsidies to these institutions; and
6. supporting and promoting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel.

#BDS: مسؤول سعودي يدعو لـ"مساعدة" الإسرائيليين

المنامة، مملكة البحرين (CNN)-- دعا الأمير تركي الفيصل، الرئيس الأسبق لجهاز المخابرات السعودي، وسفير المملكة الأسبق لدى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، إلى ضرورة "دعم ومساعدة" الشعب الإسرائيلي في اختيار "طريق الديمقراطية"، بدلاً من "الفصل العنصري."

وأشاد الأمير السعودي، الذي يتولى حالياً رئاسة المجلس الاقتصادي بالمملكة، في كلمته أمام "حوار المنامة"، المنعقد حالياً بالعاصمة البحرينية، بما جاء في خطاب العاهل الأردني، الملك عبد الله الثاني، الذي ألقاه في وقت سابق أمام المنتدى الأمني، والذي دعا خلاله الإسرائيليين إلى "الاختيار بين الديمقراطية، أو الفصل العنصري."

#BDS: In Argentina workers’ movements, community radios take up BDS

November saw a flurry of BDS activities in Argentina, where workers from the recovered factories, along with the global umbrella organization for community radio, committed to active support of the 2005 Palestinian BDS call.

Workers in the recovered factories in Argentina pledged to support the BDS call. These workers are part of a larger movement in Argentina that began in 2000 during Argentina’s economic crisis. At that time, the first workers resisted eviction from their places of work, and with the bankruptcy and flight of the management, took upon themselves the duties of production, administration and marketing. Since 2001, 205 factories around Argentina have been reclaimed by the workers.

In a statement issued in support of the BDS call, representatives from eight of the recovered factories pledged to “ensure that our work sites, our businesses and factories, […] will be spaces free of Israeli apartheid. We resolve to ensure we do not have contracts and business between our recovered companies and Israeli companies, the State of Israel or companies that support the State of Israel.” 

#BDS: City councilors to Adidas: Boycott Jerusalem Marathon

Opposition wants race out of east J’lem: “A marathon doesn't bring Jews, Arabs together. This is just an aggressive move,” Meretz councilman says.

Three Jerusalem City Council members from the opposition sent a warning letter last week to sports apparel company Adidas, one of the major sponsors of the International Jerusalem Marathon, calling on the company to withdraw its sponsorship of the race if the municipality did not remove east Jerusalem segments from the route.

“There’s no reason why it needs to go through the eastern part of the city,” said City Councilman Pepe Alalu (Meretz), who heads the opposition. “A marathon does not bring Jews and Arabs together. This is just an aggressive move.”

#BDS: المقاومة غير المسلحة ومحاربة الاحتلال

بالموازاة مع حركات المقاومة المسلحة ضد الاحتلال تنشأ حركات مقاومة مدنية تسعى للضغط على المحتل وداعميه بالمقاطعة والمساءلة القانونية والتظاهر وغيرها من الوسائل، وفي الحالة الفلسطينية تطورت الجهود غير المسلحة في الفترة الأخيرة تطوراً كبيراً لدرجة أن مناضلين من جنوب أفريقيا توجهوا إلى الناشطين في (الحملة الفلسطينية للمقاطعة الأكاديمية والثقافية لإسرائيل) قائلين: «إنكم تبلون بلاء أفضل منا بكثير، فالعالم استجاب لندائكم بعد بضع سنين فحسب. أما نحن، فقد أطلقنا أول نداءاتنا بالخمسينيات ولم يتخذ المجتمع المدني الدولي أي خطوات فعالة إلا في الثمانينيات!»، وقد كانت جنوب أفريقيا حالة رائدة في هذا النوع من المقاومة. من يصدق أن حركة BDS (المقاطعة وسحب الاستثمارات وفرض العقوبات على إسرائيل) صارت تهدد اسرائيل لدرجة تجعل (المنتدى العالمي لمكافحة معاداة السامية) يعقد - برئاسة ليبرمان- ملتقاه الدولي الرابع ويخصص ورشة عمل كاملة ضد الحركة؟ من يصدق أن حركات المقاطعة الأكادمية مثل (PACBI) تصير من هموم إسرائيل التي تجعل نتنياهو يصرح بعد زيارته لرئيس الوزراء البريطاني في أغسطس أنه ناقش معه قضية «حملات المقاطعة الأكاديمية للجامعات الإسرائيلية، ومقاضاة الضباط الإسرائيليين ببريطانيا بتهم اقتراف جرائم حرب»، وفعلاً أصبحت عدة مؤسسات أكاديمية بريطانية تقاطع إسرائيل، وفعلاً هربت الوزيرة السابقة ليفني من بريطانيا مخافة الاعتقال ومؤخراً منعت إسرائيل خمسة من ضباطها الكبار زيارة بريطانيا لذات السبب. وفي السنوات الأخيرة انضمت أكبر نقابتي عمال ببريطانيا للمقاطعة، وكذا اتحاد الصحافيين البريطانيين واتحاد نقابات العمال في جنوب أفريقيا ونقابات من كندا وإيرلندا واسكتلندا وغيرها، وأيد مجلس الكنائس العالمي ومجلس كنائس جنوب أفريقيا وكنيسة إنكلترا سحب الاستثمارات من الشركات الداعمة للاحتلال. وقاطعت شخصيات فنية شهيرة الاحتفاليات ذات الصلة بدعم إسرائيل كالمغني بونو والمغني سنوب دوغ وفرقة رولينغ ستونز، واتهم قرابة 50 مثقفا ومخرجا منهم الممثلة المعروفة جين فوندا في رسالة لإدارة مهرجان تورنتو للأفلام بالتواطؤ مع «الآلة الدعائية الإسرائيلية» لأنهم كرموا مدينة تل أبيب. لو لم تكن المقاومة المدنية مهمة لماذا تستعمل إسرائيل سلاح بحريتها لقرصنة السفن المتجهة لكسر حصار غزة، ولماذا يتجنب مسؤولوها السفر لدول بعينها خوفاً من الاعتقال، ولماذا بدأ اثنان من الأعضاء البارزين بمجلس الشيوخ الأميركي حملة لجمع توقيعات أعضاء المجلس على خطاب يطالب الرئيس أوباما بالضغط على الدول العربية لتقديم مبادرات تقارب مع تل أبيب تهدف لإنهاء المقاطعة العربية، وبعدها تقدم اثنان آخران بمشروع قانون يطالب بتتبع ومراقبة إجراءات المقاطعة العربية التجارية لإسرائيل، كل هذا لم يكن ليتم لولا أهمية هذا النوع من المقاومة. أوليس من الأولى أن تكون الدول العربية أول من تخاف ليفني وغيرها من الإرهابيين زيارتها، وأليس من المؤسف أن يقود غيرنا حملات كسر الحصار عن غزة ونقود نحن حملات منعهم والتضييق عليهم، وأليس من المخجل أن تكثر الأدلة حول إدخال إسرائيليين عبر بعض الجامعات إلى دولنا في تطبيع أكاديمي صريح، وأليس محزناً أن بعض المشاركين في اجتماع ضباط اتصال المكاتب الإقليمية لمقاطعة إسرائيل الذي انعقد في اكتوبر قالوا إن حجم التجارة العربية السرية مع العدو يبلغ 400 مليون دولار سنويا مما يعادل ضعف حجم التجارة المعلنة بين إسرائيل ومصر والأردن؟ ان هذه المقاومة تمكن الفرد الواحد من أن يكون له موقف وأن يكون له دور ولو كان خارج النطاق المكاني للصراع، وأهميتها ليس فقط في معاقبة الاحتلال وعزله بل ولتسريع سقوطه كذلك، لأن أي عدو له مقومات سياسية وقانونية واقتصادية وإعلامية وعسكرية لو دمرت ينهار وينتهي.

#BDS: مبادئ جزر القمر

منذ نشوء دولة الاحتلال الصهيوني على أرض فلسطين في العام 1948، وهناك محاولات دؤوبة من قِبل المحتل للحصول على ما يُعرف باسم «التطبيع»، والذي يعني جعل الشيء طبيعيًّا، ويُقصد به هنا تحويل العلاقات بين إسرائيل والدول المعادية إلى حالة العلاقات الطبيعية، فيصير هناك تمثيل دبلوماسي، وعلاقات اقتصادية، وزراعية، ونفطية، وأمنية، ودفاعية، بل وحتّى سياحية.

وفي هذا السياق قامت أغلب الحكومات العربية برفض التطبيع مع العدو الإسرائيلي مرّات عدة، وقامت أغلب الشعوب العربية برفضه دائمًا، وبشكل قاطع، معتبرين العدو عدوًّا، والصديق صديقًا، والدم دمًا لا يُستهان به، ويرفضون أن يجرّهم العدو الإسرائيلي لمعسول وعوده بالسلام الذي مازال يوعدنا به طوال العقود الفائتة، ولم نرَ منه غير الحرب! ويرفضون كذلك أن يخدعهم العدو فيسوقهم لسرقة مقدراتهم، وثرواتهم، ويستفيد منها ليعطيهم الفتات في المقابل. في حين أدرك الكثيرون من الطبقات المفكرة في الأمة أن هذه المحاولات الصهيونية الخبيثة ما هي إلاَّ طريقة لجرّنا إلى أن يصبح الجندي العربي حارسًا لإسرائيل ساهرًا على أمنها، وفي ذات الوقت يحاصر أهله ويحارب إخوته المجاهدين، ويطاردهم في كل مكان! في ظل هذه العلاقات «الطبيعية» التي تحول كل ما هو طارئ ودخيل إلى «طبيعي»، وكل ردة فعل إنسانية طبيعية تتحوّل إلى «عدو» يجب ملاحقته!

وقد لفت انتباهي مؤخرًا مقابلة تلفزيونية تمت مع عبدالله سامبي رئيس جمهورية جزر القمر الاتحادية -هذه الدولة العربية المهمّشة والتي تعد من أفقر دول العالم- وهو يشرح كيف رفض عرضًا إسرائيليًّا سخيًّا بملايين الدولارات شهريًّا، إذا وافق على التطبيع مع إسرائيل، رغم أن جزر القمر ليس لها وزن سياسي يُذكر في الشرق الأوسط، أو حتى في العالم! وكان المثير للاهتمام أن إحدى حججه في رفض التطبيع تتعلّق بالإرادة العامة لشعبه، واحترامه لرأي الشارع، واستدل على ذلك بأن الشعب القمري هاج وماج، وعمّته الاعتراضات عندما حاول مَن كان قبل سامبي في السلطة إقامة علاقات «طبيعية» مع إسرائيل، وبالتالي يقول: “أنا لن أطبّع؛ لأني هنا لأخدم شعبي”.

وإذا أخذنا في عين الاعتبار الفقر المدقع في جزر القمر، سنرى أن هذا النموذج ليس فقط مثيرًا للإعجاب والأنفة، بل هو كذلك حجة على الدول الأغنى أيضًا. أمّا الموقف الأكثر تأثيرًا في المقابلة فكان حين سأله المذيع: ألا تخشى من أن يتم إزاحتك من السلطة؟ فما كان منه إلاَّ أن كرر رفضه للتطبيع، ورد عليه بقوله: «أنا رجل صاحب مبادئ».

#BDS: California Residents Launch Israel Divestment Initiative Campaign

Residents of the U.S. state of California launched a divestment initiative campaign in fall 2010. The initiative, known as the Israel Divestment Campaign (IDC), is the first citizens' effort in the United States to appeal directly to voters to hold Israel accountable for violations of international law and human rights.

As of September 1st the IDC officially launched a signature gathering process. They group is required to gather the signatures of at least 434,000 registered California voters for the official petition by January 31, 2011, in order to qualify the measure for the statewide ballot sometime after March 2011. Then, if approved by a majority of voters, it will become California law.

#BDS: Industrial Workers of the World Union Votes to Officially Support BDS

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) has officially voted to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in support of Palestinian rights, according to a press release from the IWW’s website on 2 December.

The “Resolution in Support of the Workers of Palestine/Israel” was adopted in an overwhelming vote both at the IWW’s convention in Minneapolis and by the membership via referendum, making the IWW the first union in the US and the third union in Canada to officially support the Palestinian United Call for BDS, according to a statement from the group.

Canadian teen heart-throb to perform at Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park on April 14. Organizers expect to attract 60,000 people

Canadian teen heart-throb Justin Bieber will perform in Israel on April 14, 2011. The concert's expected location is Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park.

As reported by Yedioth Ahronoth, seven Israeli producers negotiated with Beiber's representatives. The one who eventually succeeded in striking a deal with the popular singer is producer Marcel Avraham, who was behind the Israel concerts of Elton John, Rod Stewart, Metallica and Leonard Cohen.

The initial plan was to hold the concert at the Ramat Gan Stadium, but the 16-year-old singer's rising popularity promoted the production team to gamble on the Yarkon Park, with the hopes of filling up the grass with 60,000 teenagers.

#BDS: Reports on BDS and Caterpillar weaponized bulldozers

The Israeli press is reporting that Caterpillar is withholding the delivery of tens of D9 bulldozers—valued at $50 million—to the Israeli military.(1) These are weaponized bulldozers that are used to illegally destroy homes and orchards of Palestinian families. And they are the very same bulldozers as the one that killed a 23-year-old American peace activist named Rachel Corrie seven years ago when she tried to protect the home of the Nasrallah family in Gaza.

That's why the next part of the story is even more amazing. The news reports say that the deliveries have been suspended now because Rachel's parents, Cindy and Craig Corrie, are bringing a civil suit against the government of Israel in a court in Tel Aviv.(2) The deliveries are to stop during the length of the trial. We take this as an indirect admission by the company that these bulldozers are being used to violate human rights and to violate the law. The Corrie story is sadly just one of thousands of stories of loss and pain.

A suspension of the sale of bulldozers is what we have been asking Caterpillar for over seven years now. This is a great win, but this is no time to let off the pressure.

Caterpillar and the U.S. government have neither confirmed nor denied the news. And news reports describe the company's move as a temporary decision only. To urge the U.S. government to make this policy permanent, please sign the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation’s petition to President Obama to continue this new policy.

We need to hold both our government and corporations profiting from the occupation accountable. TIAA-CREF, one of the largest financial services in the United States, invests heavily in Caterpillar (over $250 million as of their last financial report). Thanks to you, we've already gathered over 17,000 in our petition to TIAA-CREF, asking it to divest from Caterpillar and other companies that profit from the Israeli occupation. But we need more! Tell your friends to sign our petition. If TIAA-CREF divests from Caterpillar, it will have a rippling impact everywhere.

#BDS: New WikiLeaks revelations show Ireland blocking U.S. arms to Israel

Cable sent in 2006 indicates that the Irish government has been making it increasingly difficult for American weapons shipments to Israel to pass through its airport.

The Irish government has acted to limit transfers of American weapons to Israel and Iraq through Shannon Airport in the wake of public outrage after the Second Lebanon War, an American diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks reveals.

A cable sent in 2006 by the U.S. ambassador to Ireland at the time, James C. Kenny, discloses that the deputy head of mission warned Irish officials that the United States would begin using other European airports. Such a move could cost the Irish economy tens of millions of dollars.
